AS ORIGENS DOS BATISTAS E A RESTAURAÇÃO DO BATISMO DE CRENTES POR IMERSÃO

Resumo

O artigo procura examinar as origens e contribuições teológicas dos primeiros Batistas desde seu surgimento na Inglaterra do século XVII, com foco no resgate da prática neotestamentária do batismo de crentes por imersão. A pesquisa explora as distinções históricas e doutrinárias entre Batistas gerais e Batistas particulares, onde ambos emergem do separatismo puritano inglês. Por meio da análise de documentos históricos, confissões, como por exemplo, as confissões de fé e outras obras teológicas de referência sobre o assunto. O estudo destaca como esses grupos rejeitaram o batismo infantil (pedobatismo) em favor do credobatismo — batismo mediante uma profissão pública e pessoal de fé — como um retorno à prática do Novo Testamento. As principais descobertas revelam que os Batistas particulares, influenciados pela teologia separatista e pelo estudo das escrituras, reintroduziram a imersão como o modo normativo na década de 1640, documentado no Manuscrito Kiffin. Essa mudança os distinguiu das demais igrejas estatais, outros grupos reformados, reforçando sua identidade. O estudo ressalta o legado duradouro dos Batistas na defesa da liberdade religiosa, separação entre igreja e estado e uma eclesiologia prioritariamente biblicista. As considerações finais enfatizam o impacto do movimento nas práticas evangélicas modernas, notavelmente a adoção majoritariamente do batismo de crentes por imersão. A pesquisa contribui para a teologia histórica ao esclarecer a evolução doutrinária dos Batistas e seu papel na dissidência protestante, convidando a um estudo mais aprofundado sobre sua influência em contextos contemporâneos, como as igrejas Batistas brasileiras.

Abstract: This article examines the origins and theological contributions of early Baptists since their emergence in 17th-century England, with a focus on the revival of the New Testament practice of believer's baptism by immersion. The research explores the historical and doctrinal distinctions between General Baptists and Particular Baptists, both of which emerged from English Puritan separatism. Through the analysis of historical documents, confessions, such as the Confessions of Faith, and other theological reference works on the subject, the study highlights how these groups rejected infant baptism (pedobaptism) in favor of credobaptism—baptism through a public and personal profession of faith—as a return to New Testament practice. The main findings reveal that Particular Baptists, influenced by separatist theology and scriptural study, reintroduced immersion as the normative mode in the 1640s, as documented in the Kiffin Manuscript. This change distinguished them from other state churches and other Reformed groups, reinforcing their identity. The study highlights the lasting legacy of Baptists in defending religious freedom, separation of church and state, and a primarily biblical ecclesiology. The final considerations emphasize the impact of the movement on modern evangelical practices, notably the majority adoption of believer's baptism by immersion. The research contributes to historical theology by clarifying the doctrinal evolution of Baptists and their role in Protestant dissent, inviting a more in-depth study of their influence in contemporary contexts, such as Brazilian Baptist churches.
